Root Canal Therapy
What makes root canal therapy necessary? The following are the most common factors for needing root canal treatment:
– Trauma- from a physical blow to a tooth or constant striking of a tooth from the opposite jaw
– Physical irritation caused by deep decay or a very large filling
– Severe gum infection
Whatever the initial cause, the tooth pulp becomes irritated and infected. Bacteria grow within the tooth pulp, causing pressure and pain, and sometimes swelling of the face. In some cases deterioration happens so gradual, that little pain is felt. In both cases the fact remains that bacteria have destroyed the pulp. When this happens the bone surrounding the tooth may become infected and abscessed and may eventually destroy the bone around the tooth.
What happens during treatment?
Through digital x-rays and a clinical examination, it can be determined whether or not root canal therapy is needed to save the tooth. When this is determined, a prescription of antibiotics and pain medication may be prescribed to help in healing and reduce swelling. Usually a few appointments are needed to clean and remove the diseased pulp, permanently fill and seal the pulp chamber, and place a temporary filling in the opening of the tooth. Sometimes the tooth may be left open to allow the infection to drain, we will do whatever is necessary to assure your comfort.
Throughout the procedure digital x-rays are taken to ensure all of the infected pulp is removed. After this process is finished, the tooth will be permanently restored to chewing function.
What care follows treatment?
Once the root canal treatment has been completed, you should consider the following:
- Now that the infected nerve is removed your tooth will become more brittle and susceptible to fracture, so it is advisable to place a crown over the tooth to prevent further destruction.
- You may notice your endodontically treated tooth will change in colour. Though this discoloration is of no medical concern, you may be interested in having the tooth whitened , if you do not decide to place a crown over the tooth.
Throughout your root canal treatment we will make every effort to ensure your comfort . Our goal is to help you preserve your natural oral environment , so you can smile with confidence!
